Painting in Red Hook, NY

Each September, Red Hook fills its village with the free music of Hardscrabble Day.

A Town of College Halls, River Hamlets and Back-road Farmland

Red Hook is really a cluster of places under one name. Bard College, established in 1860 at Annandale-on-Hudson, has given the town an arts and academic community for well over a century, and that hamlet sits right on the Hudson River. Tivoli, a second incorporated village in the town, and Barrytown both look out over the same water, while Upper Red Hook keeps to the rural interior and Fraleighs and Cokertown stay small and quiet. It is a town of lecture halls and riverfront hamlets and back-road farmland, and people here still turn out together in the village downtown when the season calls for it.

SBG Finishing and Paint is a painting company, and Red Hook keeps us busy. We paint interiors and exteriors, bring tired kitchen cabinets back to life, and take on commercial jobs for the businesses in and around the village. We like a town that holds this much history and still keeps building, because it means every home is a little different and no two jobs are alike. From the first wall to the last coat, the aim is a finish you are glad to live with.

Our Painting Services in Red Hook

Interior Painting

Red Hook's Colonial and Federal-era houses from the 1790s through the 1840s were built with brick and original plaster walls. Well-kept plaster can carry a fresh finish beautifully once the surface underneath is sound. Interior painting does not require a building permit anywhere in New York State, so refreshing a single bedroom or a whole floor in Red Hook stays a simple decision.

Exterior Painting

Red Hook still has a handful of 18th-century Dutch stone farmhouses, the Heermance Farmhouse among them, and old stone needs coatings that can breathe and flex as the weather turns. In the hamlet overlay zones, the town's Design Review Committee looks at exterior changes and new construction, so outside colors and materials are worth settling early. On a Red Hook exterior, the right product depends on what each wall is made of, from wood to stone.

Kitchen Cabinet Painting

Kitchen cabinet painting gives a Red Hook kitchen a fresh look without the cost of new cabinetry. Cabinet doors take a lot of daily handling, so they need a hard, smooth finish that holds up to hands, heat and cleaning. A repainted cabinet can carry a Red Hook kitchen through years of daily use.

Commercial Painting

The Village of Red Hook is the town's commercial core, its shops set along Broadway and US Route 9, in the part once called Lower Red Hook and Hardscrabble. A 2024–25 land-use study points to the North Broadway corridor along US Route 9 as the primary growth corridor into the village. A Red Hook storefront or office holds up best with a finish that takes daily traffic and still looks sharp.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you paint the older homes in Red Hook?

Yes. Red Hook has preserved Victorian and Second Empire houses from the 1850s through the 1880s, and some still keep their original plaster interiors. Older plaster can be sound and lovely, but it behaves differently than drywall: it may show hairline cracks or spots where the surface has gone chalky, and it takes a primer and patching approach suited to plaster rather than a quick single coat. Painting one of these homes is mostly about respecting what is already there and giving the walls a finish that suits their age. The right finish lets a Victorian's age read as character rather than wear.

When is the best time of year to paint a house in Red Hook?

For exterior work in Red Hook, the warmer, drier stretch from late spring into early fall is usually the most reliable. The freeze season here runs about 5.3 months, and the year swings roughly 64 degrees between January lows and July highs, so paint applied in the cold or onto damp surfaces struggles to cure and bond. Interior painting can go ahead any time of year, since the temperature indoors stays steady. Even in summer, a wall in full sun paints best once it has cooled from the day's peak heat.

Does Red Hook regulate what I can do to the inside of my home?

No. Red Hook has no local Historic Landmark District, which means there is no Certificate of Appropriateness process for interior work, so how you repaint the rooms inside your Red Hook home is your own decision. The only real question is what will wear well in the rooms you use most. In a busy kitchen or hallway, a harder, more washable finish tends to hold up best.

How do you get a paint job to last on a home in Red Hook?

A lasting finish on a Red Hook home comes down to preparation more than the paint itself. Clean, dry, sound surfaces hold color far longer than fresh coats rushed over dirt or loose old paint. Bare wood wants a primer that grips, glossy trim wants a light scuff so the next coat can bite, and sealed gaps keep water out of the walls.

Do you only work on older homes in Red Hook, or new ones too?

In Red Hook you will find homes of many different ages and styles. A newer build with factory-primed trim paints up quickly, so the work there is mostly a clean, even coat. The building's age simply tells us where to start.
