Exterior Painting in the Hudson Valley

Siding, trim and cedar shakes painted to stand up to Hudson Valley summers and freeze-thaw winters. 80% of an exterior that lasts is the prep.

What the Job Really Is

A Hudson Valley Exterior Lives or Dies on the Prep

Paint is only as good as what it sticks to. Our summers are humid, our winters swing through freeze and thaw, and the sun works at south- and west-facing walls all year. Those conditions find every shortcut. So we start by washing off chalk, dirt, and mildew, then scrape and feather failing paint, prime bare and weathered wood, and caulk the gaps where water gets in. Coating over an unwashed, unprimed surface is the most common reason a paint job peels before the last check clears.

Hudson Valley homes bring their own demands — cedar shakes, century-old clapboard, and pre-1978 wood that we handle lead-safe. We match the coating system to the surface and paint in the right conditions, not just on the calendar. The result is a finish built to hold through our seasons, and an exterior we're proud to put our name on.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time of year to paint a house exterior in the Hudson Valley?

Late spring through early fall, when temperatures and humidity let the paint cure right. We watch the forecast and dew points rather than the calendar. Coating in the wrong conditions is a common cause of early peeling, and it's exactly the kind of shortcut we don't take.

My old paint is chalking and peeling — can it still be repainted?

Yes, when the prep is done right. Chalking is oxidized paint that has lost its bond, so it has to be washed and scraped back to something solid before new coats go on. Bare and weathered wood gets primed and failing edges get feathered. New paint over unaddressed chalk or peel just fails again.

Do you paint cedar shakes and older wood siding?

Yes. Hudson Valley housing stock is full of cedar shakes and century-old clapboard, and we handle both. Older, drier wood needs gentler washing, careful priming, and the right coating system, and on pre-1978 homes we work lead-safe. Prep on aged wood is what separates a repaint that lasts from one that peels in two seasons.

How long will an exterior paint job last?

A properly prepped and painted exterior should hold up for years through our seasons. The single biggest factor isn't the paint brand. It's whether the surface was cleaned, dried, and primed before painting. We spell the prep scope out in the estimate, because that's the work that makes the rest worth doing.
